Where Did You Find Your Dog?

Sammy Lazer Jr. (formerly Lazer) came to us through Mayday Pit Bull Rescue & Advocacy in Phoenix. He was surrendered because his owner could not afford Sammy’s medical care. Mayday rescued him and provided the treatment he needed. Sammy has disseminated Valley Fever and bony masses on his jaw. The disease is well managed through medication, which he may be on for life. We recently discovered that Sammy has nighttime vision loss. We are seeing an eye specialist to determine the cause and seek treatment. Despite any issues, Sammy is pure joy. He is spunky, silly, smart, and loving. He makes us laugh every day, and has brought out the very best in his big sister, Delilah.

Tell Us About the Moment When You Knew that You Two Were Meant for Each Other.

The Arizona monsoon brought Sammy to our home. A tree fell on the roof of the Mayday founder’s house, causing extensive damage. She temporarily fostered out the dogs in her care, and we asked to take Sammy. One look at that pouty old man face, and you will know why we fell in love so easily. It didn’t take long, and we knew that Sammy was ours. One afternoon, I sat on the living room floor, and Sammy just leaned into me. I could feel his body let go as he slowly collapsing into my lap, and then he looked up at me. That was it. I was hopelessly lost to him forever.

How Has Your Hero Changed Your Life?

I thought Sammy was my protector; as it turns out, I am his. He is gentle, but easily startled… trusting, but cautious… and I have learned to pay attention to my energy as much as his. A complete goofball, Sammy is not shy about letting his freak-flag fly. He will sprint full out around the back yard, simply for the joy of running free. He illustrates the power of letting go and giving in to the silly side of life. Sammy has also shown how vital it is to nurture the gifts we see in others… he is incredibly smart and thrives on new challenges. I see agility is our future. Most of all, Sammy has reemphasized the strength of unconditional love and the immense power of second chances. I am eternally grateful to Mayday Pit Bull Rescue & Advocacy for bringing Sammy Lazer into our lives, and cannot wait to continue this journey with Sammy (and Delilah) by my side.

About Project Blue Collar:
Project Blue Collar (PBC) is a global grassroots movement and passion brand dedicated to promoting dog adoption. PBC is striving to tell a different story about rescue dogs – not one of pity and sadness, but one that celebrates the joy and love that comes from welcoming a rescue dog into your family. Their goal is simple: To elevate the status of rescue dogs as prized pets and inspire more people to adopt.
PBC’s signature Support the Underdog® Blue Collar is the symbol of the movement. Taking the concept of the rubber cause wristband and making it into an accessory dog collar, this symbol gets conversations going and lets dogs be the marketers of the movement. The Support the Underdog® Blue Collar gives people a way to show their “rescue pride” and tell their dog’s story. Even dogs who weren’t adopted can join the movement to show their support for rescue dogs.
To date, PBC has “Blue Collared” dogs in 11 countries and in all 50 U.S. states. PBC donates a portion of their sales to rescue groups to support their lifesaving work. Visit www.projectbluecollar.com to learn more.
