February  is   Spay  and  Neuter  Month,  recognized  across  the  country  by  the  Humane  Society  of  the  United  States  and  the  SPCA.    Organized  by  Creative  Rescue,  Good  Dog  Art  is  a  month-‐long  silent  auction  and  celebratory  benefit  event  supporting  both  organizations  with  the  sales  of  fine  artwork  featuring  dogs.     Predominately  photographic  works,  half  of  the  pieces  will  be  shown  at  San  Francisco’s  Wag  Hotels,  and  the  other  half  at  the  San  Francisco  SPCA’s  Mission  location.  All  work  will  also  be  shown  online  for  bidding.  Artists  include  William  Wegman,  Jessie  Tarbox  Beals,  Eliot  Erwitt,  André  Kertész,  Nicholas  Nixon,  and  many  others.

A  large  portion  of  the  artwork  was  donated  by  Ruth  Silverman,  a  fine  art  dealer  and  collector,  with  the  rest  donated  by  various  Bay  Area  galleries,  artists,  and  photographers.  Additionally,  auction  participants  will  have  the  opportunity  to  bid  on  six  different  custom  portrait  sessions  of  their  own  pets  donated  by  Bay  Area  photographers.  On  Thursday,  February  26th,  San  Francisco’s  Wag  Hotels  will  host  a  party  celebrating  Good  Dog  Art,  which  will  be  the  final  opportunity  to  bid  in  the  silent  auction.  Proceeds  will  benefit  both  the  SPCA’s  “Take  Your  Best  Shot”  program,  which  increases  the   adoption  rate  in  high-‐kill,  low-‐income  shelters  by  presenting  quality,  attractive  portraits  of  available  pets  to  potential  adopters.  Proceeds  will  also  go  to  The  Humane  Society’s  “Pets  for  Life”  program,  which  addresses  the  need  for  spay/neuter  services  in  under-‐served  communities,  where  up  to  90%  of  pets  are  unaltered.

The  SFSPCA  “Take  your  Best  Shot”  program  increases  the  adoption  rate  in  high-‐kill,  low-‐income  shelters  by  presenting  dogs  by  way  of  attractive,  uncaged  photographic  portraits.  This  strategy  proved  to  be  highly  effective  at  a  recent  test  at  the  Stockton,  CA  shelter,  where  there  was  a  strong  increase  in  adoptions.    https://www.sfspca.org/shelter-‐photography

Recognizing  that  people’s  love  for  their  pets  transcends  socioeconomic  circumstances  and  cultural  differences,  The  Humane  Society’s  “Pets  for  Life”  program  is  making  transformational  change  for  cats  and  dogs  by  reaching  out  to  people  in  underserved  communities  and  addressing  the  need  for  affordable,  accessible  pet  care.  In  many  such  places,  up  to  90%  of  dogs  and  cats  are  unaltered.  humanesociety.org/petsforlife
