Pet World Insider Article – From SlimmDoggy.com – Reasons that a Dog is a Great Workout Partner

By steve

Last week we wrote about the research which supports the idea that having a dog can mean increased activity for the owner. The evidence is pretty compelling: dog owners are likely to get more exercise than non dog owners.

For this week’s FitDog Friday post we have created a list of reasons why a dog is a great workout partner. Thanks to our readers here and on Facebook for contributing great suggestions! Here is the list, in no particular order.

Reasons that a Dog is a Great Workout Partner

  • They provide a little extra “pull” when you have little energy left to finish the run or walk.
  • They never complain about the WoD (Workout of the Day).
  • They never cancel a workout.
  • They don’t mind how slow you go.
  • They don’t mind how fast you go.
  • When their endocannabinnoids (which cause “runner’s high) kick in and they get giddy, they motivate you go faster/harder.
  • They don’t make fun of how you look in shorts or tights.
  • They will lick your face in the middle of an exercise.
  • They serve as an alarm clock by making sure you are awake for early morning workouts.
  • They will never “dog” you for not being able to keep up with them!
  • They are ready to go any time and at a moment’s notice.
  • They love you for being their workout partner.
  • They love doing whatever you are doing even if it means exercising.
  • By making sure they are fit you are making sure that you are fit.
  • They are experts at downward dog.
  • They smile during the workout.
  • They make you smile during the workout.
  • Running with a dog gives you a partner, something to focus on besides how many more miles to go.
