What We Do
Dogwise.com brings you the largest selection of cutting-edge information on living, loving, and working with dogs available anywhere. Dogwise.com is an easy to use e-commerce site that keeps both dog professionals and dog enthusiasts up to date on the latest information on—what else—dogs. With over 20 years of experience in the field we know how to find and bring our customers the best in dog training, behavior, health, breeding, sports, clicker training, and other dog-related topics. Plus, we have researched and handpicked the ultimate dog toys, training tools, foods and supplements that are recommended by experts in the field.

Our Customers Drive Our Business
While we have years of experience in the dog world, it is our customers who are the experts on their needs. They tell us which books and DVDs work for them…and which do not. Many times it is our customers who tell us about a new book or DVD they think we should carry.

We Know Our Stuff
What makes Dogwise exceptional in the dog book and DVD business is that we know our products. We have dog-savvy staff who review the products we sell to make sure they offer sound information that isn’t just one more book on an already covered topic. We sell at dog shows and training conferences around the country and hear about the latest techniques and experts. We train our Customer Service Representatives about the information contained in our new products. Perhaps the most important thing we do is LISTEN. If you tell us what you want to accomplish we’ll be glad to help you find the right product. If you want more information on a product we carry than is on our website, they will walk out to the warehouse, pull it off the shelf and give you additional information so you can make your buying decision. How’s that for superior service?

Brief Company History
Charlene Woodward started Direct Book Service in 1986. When it started it had nothing to do with dogs! It was created as a “special order” book retailer that catered to schools, technical libraries, and individuals with unusual book-buying needs. While special ordering dog books for some clients, Charlene discovered that people who wanted high quality books about their dogs found them difficult (impossible!) to find. With the encouragement of her dog-loving customers, she started selling books at dog shows in the Pacific Northwest.

Soon dog show customers asked how they could buy dog books between dog shows. A simple catalog was printed up and orders started coming in turning the company into a bona-fide mail order company. By the late 1980s, Charlene’s husband Larry joined the operation as the company CEO. The business expanded outgrowing its original quarters and in 1992, looking for a smaller town and lots of warehouse space, Dogwise and the Woodward family moved from Seattle to Wenatchee, “The Apple Capital of the World”, in central Washington. The company now resides in a 9,000 square foot office/warehouse building where we house tens-of-thousands of products so we can ship your order fast!

Selling at dog shows continues to be a core part of the business. When Bill Woodward, Larry’s brother, and his wife Judy joined the company in 1995, dog shows became an even more important part of the business. These “road warriors” travel 40+ weekends a year from Florida to Massachusetts and Idaho to Louisiana. Check out our website to see when they will be in your part of the country.

In 2000 Dogwise Publishing was established when we recognized that historically important books on dogs had been allowed to go out of print by other publishers. Books like Training Dogs by Konrad Most, Canine Terminology by Harold Spira and The Dog In Action by McDowell Lyon have valuable information that is useful for current and future generations of dog lovers. Dogwise Publishing now produces six to ten new books a year on topics that are important to our customers. Renowned dog experts who are published by Dogwise Publishing include Jean Donaldson, Patricia McConnell, Turid Rugaas, Roger Abrantes, Brenda Aloff, Sarah Kalnajs, Rachel Page Elliott and Pat Miller. Our focus is on creating humane, understandable and scientifically sound information for people who enrich their lives by working with, playing with and loving dogs. Dogwise Publishing has an insider’s knowledge of dogs and serves both the dog-loving public and the dog-oriented professional.
