A first-generation-Filipino-American-Chicagoan, Roy Yanong’s MD parents bought him his first doctor’s kit at age five, “subtly” luring him and his two sisters toward human medicine. But a genetic predisposition to all things aquatic; a steady diet of James Herriot, Jacques Cousteau, and Marlin Perkins (with the oft “endangered” Jim Fowler); wet, winged, and tail-wagging pets; and frequent trips to aquaria, zoos, and wild animal parks in Chicago and Florida veered Roy toward An Animal Life.
After graduation from Penn in 1992, Roy was hired by 5-D Tropical, Inc., a large ornamental fish farm in Plant City, Florida, where he was plunged into the aquarium fish industry. In 1996, he joined the University of Florida/IFAS Tropical Aquaculture Laboratory in Ruskin where he works today, providing extension, research, and educational programs in fish health management, including on-site veterinary assistance and disease diagnostic support for aquaculturists throughout the state. He also works closely with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Florida’s Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Roy is currently an associate professor and extension veterinarian in the Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences program of the School of Forest Resources and Conservation, headquartered on UF’s main campus in Gainesville, and faculty in the UF College of Veterinary Medicine’s Aquatic Animal Health Program.
Dr. Yanong’s adjunct pursuits include singing, high-intensity doodling, comedy writing, eating, and travel (not necessarily in that order of priority). Although he freely admits mediocrity in most of these endeavors, he keeps trying. To “sharpen the saw,” he enjoys fishing, canoeing, kayaking, scuba diving, sprint triathlons, and, of course, quality time with family and friends.
